Community in Conversation at the Carnegie is an early-evening speaker series that brings Islanders together around timely topics rooted in Martha’s Vineyard life. The series features local voices, shared learning, and meaningful conversation in a historic setting.
The southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis) arrived on Martha's Vineyard about 10 years ago, but it took until 2023 for an outbreak to emerge. "Dendroctonus" means "tree killer" in Latin, and indeed, the southern pine beetle excels at killing trees, namely pitch pines. Sheriff's Meadow Foundation and its president and forester, Adam Moore, have been working with the beetles since 2023. Adam will share his experiences dealing with the beetle outbreak and will offer thoughts on what to expect from the southern pine beetle in years to come.
